The special characteristics of shaped parts, boards
or mats made of ceramic fibre are high thermal insulation, thermal
shock resistance and low heat storage. Compared with a relatively
dense lining with lightweight refractory blocks, fibre insulation
permits considerably faster heating/cooling with minimum energy
loss.
However, the excellent properties of thermal load rating of ceramic
fibre products are opposed by unfavourable mechanical properties.Among
the various products made of ceramic fibre, vacuum-shaped parts,
boards have the relatively better wear resistance.
The combination of Varioflex with a vacuum-shaped part renders
this component wear resistant at the surface in contact with the
medium, stays resistant to thermal shock and is highly
insulating because of the low density of 0.3 g/cm³ of
the fibre part.
Varioflex is a fibre-reinforced oxide ceramic with a matrix material
of different metallic oxides. Varioflex is characterised by its
high thermal shock resistance and flexible characteristics with
low brittleness. Varioflex can be used to manufacture three-dimensional
shaped parts in wall thicknesses from 0.7 mm to 3 mm up to an application
temperature of 1200°C.
The applications for Varioflex in combination with shaped parts
made of ceramic fibre are manifold. The combination of Varioflex
with vacuum shaped parts can be used in
both aluminium foundries and fast-burning furnaces.
